How it's calculated
FFMI is calculated in three steps. First, lean mass: weight × (1 − body fat % ÷ 100) — an 80 kg lifter at 15% body fat carries 68 kg of fat-free mass. Second, that lean mass is divided by height in meters squared, exactly like BMI: 68 ÷ 1.80² = 21.0. Third, the normalized FFMI adds a height correction — FFMI + 6.1 × (1.8 − height in meters) — so taller and shorter lifters can be compared fairly, since raw FFMI drifts downward with height for purely geometric reasons.
The scale's reference points come from Kouri and colleagues' 1995 study comparing steroid-using and drug-free bodybuilders: the drug-free group topped out near a normalized FFMI of 25, while exceeding it was common only among users. That made 25 the much-cited 'natural limit' — better read as a statistical boundary than a wall, since outliers with elite genetics exceed it, but it remains a useful reality check for physique goals and claimed naturals alike.
Interpretation for men: 17-18 is untrained, 19-21 is a solid trained physique, 22-23 is advanced, and 24-25 approaches the natural ceiling. Women average roughly 3-4 points lower at every level. Your FFMI is only as good as the body-fat estimate feeding it — a 3-point body-fat error moves FFMI by about half a point — so measure body fat consistently (the Navy-method calculator here works well) and track FFMI over months, not weeks. A rising FFMI at stable body fat is the clearest evidence available that you are actually gaining muscle.
